What Is Sports Massage?

Sports massage is hands-on treatment for muscles and soft tissue, aimed at helping you move and recover better. Despite the name, you don't need to be an athlete. It's for anyone whose body is feeling the effects of what they do, whether that's training, walking, lifting children or sitting at a desk all day.

At TNT, Sarah-Beth offers three types of treatment.

Sports massage

Focused on the muscles you use most in your sport or training. Often used to recover from hard sessions or to keep you moving well through a training block.

Deep tissue massage

Firmer pressure working into deeper layers of muscle. Useful for stubborn tightness that a lighter massage doesn't reach.

Remedial massage

Treatment aimed at a specific problem area, like a stiff neck, a sore lower back or a tight hip. It starts with working out what's going on before deciding how to treat it.

Who Is Sports Massage For?

If any of these sound like you, it's worth booking in:

  • Fell walkers and hikers who come home from Ingleborough or Whernside with legs that feel like concrete
  • Runners building mileage through the winter
  • Lifters and class-goers whose shoulders, hips or back feel tight after heavy weeks
  • Anyone training for an event, like Hyrox or the Yorkshire Three Peaks
  • Desk workers and drivers with stiff necks, shoulders and lower backs
  • People who work on their feet or do physical jobs all week

What Happens at a Sports Massage Appointment?

If you've never had one, here's roughly how it goes:

  1. A conversation first. Where it hurts, how long it's been going on, what you do day to day and any injuries or health conditions.
  2. A look at how you move. This helps work out where the tightness or pain is coming from.
  3. The treatment. Sports, deep tissue or remedial massage, depending on what you need. Tell Sarah-Beth if the pressure is too much or not enough.
  4. Aftercare advice. Simple things you can do at home, like stretches or changes to your training, to help the benefits last.

It's normal to feel a little tender for a day or two afterwards, much like after a new workout.

Who Is Sarah-Beth?

Sarah-Beth is a First Class BSc (Hons) Sports Rehabilitation graduate. Her degree is in exactly this area: understanding how injuries happen, how bodies recover and how to get people moving well again.

She works at TNT on Fridays, so if you train with us, it's easy to book a session around your week. You can see her profile alongside the rest of the team on our team page, and plan it around your sessions using our class timetable.

How Sports Massage Fits Around Your Training

Massage works best alongside good training, not instead of it. A few simple pointers:

  • Before an event: book a few days ahead rather than the day before, so you're not tender on race day.
  • During a training block: regular sessions can help you spot tightness early.
  • After a big effort: wait until the initial soreness settles, then book in to help recovery.

If you're building towards something this winter, our Hyrox training guide and Yorkshire Three Peaks training plan show how we structure the training side.

Sports Massage or Physio: Which Do You Need?

Both can help, but they're not the same thing. As a rough guide:

  • Sports massage is a good fit for tightness, general aches, recovery from training and keeping you moving well.
  • Physiotherapy is the better first step for a fresh injury, pain after an accident, or a problem that needs diagnosing and a rehab plan.

Sarah-Beth's degree is in sports rehabilitation, so she's well placed to tell you if you'd be better served by seeing someone else first.

Simple Things to Do Between Sessions

Massage works best when you look after yourself in between. Three easy habits:

  1. Keep moving. Gentle walking or an easy bike session helps tight muscles more than total rest.
  2. Build strength around the problem area. Stronger muscles tend to cope better with the load you put on them. Our coaches can show you what to work on.
  3. Notice what sets it off. A long drive, a heavy deadlift session, a steep descent. Spotting the pattern helps you and Sarah-Beth fix the cause, not just the symptom.

When to See Your GP Instead

Massage isn't right for everything. Speak to your GP first if you have:

  • Pain after a fall, accident or sudden injury
  • Swelling, heat or redness that won't settle
  • Numbness, pins and needles or weakness
  • Pain that's getting worse, keeps you awake or has no obvious cause

If in doubt, mention it when you book and Sarah-Beth will tell you whether massage is the right next step.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I get a sports massage near Kirkby Lonsdale?

At TNT Fitness, Unit 1 Bridge Mill, Cowan Bridge, a couple of miles along the A65. Sarah-Beth offers sports, deep tissue and remedial massage there on Fridays.

How do I book a sports massage at TNT Fitness?

Ring Sarah-Beth directly on 07375 488698, or call the gym on 07903 809293 and we'll point you in the right direction.

Does sports massage hurt?

It can feel firm, especially on tight areas, but it shouldn't be agony. Tell Sarah-Beth if the pressure is too much and she'll adjust it.

How often should I have a sports massage?

It depends on your training and what you're treating. Some people come once for a specific problem, others book regularly through a training block. Sarah-Beth can advise after your first session.

What should I wear?

Comfortable clothes you can move in. If your legs are being treated, shorts make things easier.

Can sports massage help with tight legs after fell walking?

Yes. Hills and long descents are hard on calves, quads and hips, and massage can help them recover. Pair it with some leg strength work and future walks get easier too.
