Looking for a Personal Trainer in Kirkby Lonsdale? How to Choose the Right Coach

Tomi TathamTomi Tatham/

Looking for a personal trainer in Kirkby Lonsdale? Here's how to choose the right coach for your goal, and meet the TNT Fitness team two miles away in Cowan Bridge.

You've decided you want a personal trainer in Kirkby Lonsdale, and then the doubts start. Who's actually qualified? Who'll understand your goal? And how do you avoid paying someone to count your reps while they check their phone?

This guide shows you how to choose a coach properly. It also introduces the TNT Fitness team, two miles down the A65 in Cowan Bridge, so you can match your goal to the right person before you book a single session.

When Personal Training Is Worth It

Not everyone needs a personal trainer. If you're consistent, injury-free and still making progress, a good gym and a solid programme might be all you need.

PT earns its money in four situations:

  • You don't know where to start, or you keep starting and stopping.
  • You're coming back from injury, pregnancy or a long break.
  • You have a specific goal with a deadline, such as an event, a sport or a transformation.
  • Your progress has stalled and you can't work out why.

If any of those sound like you, a good coach will save you months of guesswork.

What to Look For in a Personal Trainer

Qualifications you can check. Level 3 Personal Trainer is the standard you should expect. If your goal is specialist, look for more on top, such as strength and conditioning, sports therapy or a British Weightlifting qualification.

Experience with people like you. A coach who works with athletes isn't automatically right for a nervous beginner, and the reverse is also true. Ask who they're training right now.

A plan beyond the session. You might see your coach once or twice a week. A good one tells you exactly what to do on the other days.

Honesty about timescales. Anyone promising a stone in a fortnight is selling, not coaching. Real change is built week by week.

Someone you'll actually turn up for. Chemistry matters. You'll do your best work with a coach you trust and enjoy training with.

Meet the TNT Fitness Coaches

Every coach at TNT has a different speciality. Here's how to match your goal to the right person.

Body Transformation: Johnny Palmer

Johnny specialises in body transformation. If you have a clear physique goal and want structured coaching to get there, he's the person to talk to. He's on Instagram at @johnnypalmer_coach.

Strength, Powerlifting and Hyrox: Louise Coates

Sport, Performance and Injury Prevention: Karrina Howe

Karrina is an S&C coach and BSc Sports Therapist with 10 years' experience, and she holds British Weightlifting Level 2. She has worked with basketball, football, weightlifting, judo and paralympic rowing athletes. If you play a sport or train around old injuries, her background is hard to beat.

Pregnancy, Postnatal and Pilates: Anna Anyon

Anna is a Level 3 PT and Pilates instructor with eight years' experience, and she specialises in pre and postnatal training. If you're pregnant or getting back to training after having a baby, she'll make sure you do it safely.

Boxing and MMA: Finn Rayner and Tomi Tatham

Tomi is TNT's founder and head coach, a former professional boxer who reached a #4 UK ranking at light heavyweight. Finn first came to Tomi aged 12 to build his confidence. He's now 21, an MMA fighter and one of our coaches. One-to-one boxing and MMA coaching is available by appointment, and you don't need to want to fight to benefit. Finn is on Instagram at @frc_coach.

Nervous First-Timers: Sharon Rucastle

Sharon has trained with Tomi since 2014 and is known for how she works with nervous first-timers. If walking into a gym is the hardest part for you, start with her.

You can see everyone's full profile on our team page.

A More Affordable Way In: Group Coaching

If one-to-one sessions aren't in your budget yet, you can still get coached every week.

Women's Group PT runs on Wednesday and Friday mornings with Tomi. It gives you group coaching in a supportive environment, with sessions adapted to every level.

Every class on our class timetable is coach-led too. The Gym + 3 Classes membership at £80 a month gets you three coached sessions a week plus full gym access. Browse the options on our classes page.

Get Your Answers Ready Before You Call

A first conversation with a coach goes much better if you've done five minutes of thinking first. Before you ring, jot down:

  • Your goal in plain words, and any date it needs to be done by
  • Any injuries, niggles or medical conditions your coach should know about
  • The days and times you can realistically train
  • What you've tried before, and what got in the way
  • Roughly what you'd like to spend each month

That's all a coach needs to point you towards the right person and the right plan. It also shows you quickly whether they listen, which matters as much as any qualification.

Four Questions to Ask Before You Book

Before you commit to any personal trainer, at TNT or anywhere else, ask them:

  1. What would my first week look like?
  2. How will we measure my progress?
  3. What should I be doing between our sessions?
  4. How often do you think I need to see you, and why?

A good coach will answer all four clearly. If they can't, keep looking.

What Our Members Say

We'd rather let members speak for us. Caroline Eddington put it this way: "Who'd have thought going to the gym could be such a laugh. Tomi knows his stuff and really cares about his clients."

Fiona Ward, who had been a gym-goer for years before joining, said her strength has come on hugely since she started at TNT. You can read more on our testimonials page.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is TNT Fitness from Kirkby Lonsdale?

We're about two miles down the A65 in Cowan Bridge, just a few minutes in the car. There's plenty of parking, and the gym is open 5am to 10pm, seven days a week.

How much does personal training cost at TNT Fitness?

Rates depend on the coach and how often you train, so ring 07903 809293 for current prices. You can also ask about combining PT with a membership so you can train on your own between sessions.

Can a personal trainer help if I've never been to a gym?

Yes, and that's often when PT is most valuable. Your coach will teach you the basics properly from day one, so you build confidence instead of copying strangers on YouTube.

Can I train with a PT while pregnant or after having a baby?

Yes. Anna Anyon specialises in pre and postnatal training. Always get the go-ahead from your GP or midwife first, then Anna will build a plan around where you are.

Do I have to want to fight to do boxing PT?

Not at all. Most people use one-to-one boxing for fitness, coordination and confidence. Finn himself first walked into TNT to build confidence, not to fight.
